Release Notes

1. Download and Install

Any previous versions of this software must be uninstalled first.  Data files wile be preserved, but you will need to re-configure the AutoCopy Service.

Download the Recorded TV Manager Console installer (msi) file and run it on the Host computer (Host).

The Host can be any computer on the network.  Installing on more than one Host at the same time is not recommended.  The recommended Host is Windows 7 which provides full WTV File support.  Windows XP is not recommended as a Host for networks with Vista and Windows 7 clients.

The AutoCopy Service will be installed on the Host along with the Recorded TV Manager Console Application (Console).

The software should be installed in a user account that has Administrative privilege and is password protected.

Start the Console from the Desktop icon or Start Menu.  The Console requires elevated privilege, so it may be necessary to "Allow" the program in User Account Control (UAC).

2. Configure the AutoCopy Service

The AutoCopy service runs whenever the Host is running.  When the Host starts, the AutoCopy  service is automatically started.  Before AutoCopy will work with other computers on the network, you must specify a Log On account under which the AutoCopy service will be logged on when the service is started. The Log On account must have Administrative privilege and be password protected.  Usually, it's the same account in which you installed the Console (recommended).

See Configuring AutoCopy

3. Share Recorded TV Folders

Before you can add folders to the recorded TV Folder List, those folders must be shared with Full access to the user account that the AutoCopy service and Console are logged in under.

See Folder Sharing

4. Allow the Program(s) through Windows Firewall

In order to facilitate communications between the Host and other network shares, it may be necessary to create exceptions to the Windows Firewall.

See Setting Firewall Exceptions

5. Create the Folder List

Add folders to the Folder List in the Console.  Note that there must be at least two folders in the Folder List before you can define AutoCopy rules:

  1. A source folder, which must be a "Media Center" folder.
  2. A destination folder where recordings will be moved.

See Adding Folders to the Folder List

6. Define AutoCopy Rules

Use the AutoCopy Rule Editor to define AutoCopy rules.

Start the AutoCopy Service if it's not already running.  Note that once the AutoCopy Service has been configured it will automatically start whenever the Host starts, and will run continuously as long as the Host is on.

Important: When you first define AutoCopy rules and then turn on the AutoCopy service, any existing recordings will NOT be moved because the Create event only occurs for new recordings.  Use Recorded TV Manager 3 to move existing recordings.

7. Install Recorded TV Manager 3

Optional, but recommended.

Download and install Recorded TV Manager 3 on the Host.

You can also install Recorded TV Manager 3 on any other machine on the network.  When installing on other machines, it is necessary to Manually Set the PATH to the default PATH Variable on the Host.

8. Install Recorded TV Manager Media Center Add-in

Optional.

Download and install Recorded TV Manager Media Center Add-in on any Vista or Windows 7 Media Center machine.

Note that although the current documentation for the Media Center Add-in is relative to the Windows Home Server Add-in, the software works the same for the Console.

It may be necessary to follow the steps outlined in Using Media Center Extenders to synchronize the PATH Variable with the Media Center Add-in.
