Recorded TV Folder List

The Folder List is the list of folders on your network which record and/or archive recorded TV files created by Microsoft Media Center.

A Recorded TV Folder is any folder anywhere on the network where you wish to store recorded TV files created by Microsoft Media Center.

A Media Center Folder is the folder on a Media Center computer where new recordings are stored by Media Center, usually Public/Recorded TV.

Adding Folders to the Folder List

To add folders to the Folder List, in the Console select Add... from the Folder menu or right-click in the Folder List and select Add... from the context menu.

In the Browse For Folder dialog, select shared folders from Network (or My Network Places in XP) to insure the path is in Universal Naming Convention (UNC) format.  See here for more information.

In the Properties dialog, enter the folder Nickname in the textbox.  The folder Nickname is the name by which the folder will be referred to within the Console and AutoCopy Rules Editor.  Folder nicknames must be unique.

Select folder Attributes:

Click OK to add the folder to the Folder List.

Removing Folders from the Folder List

To remove folders from the Folder List, select the folder and then select Remove from the Folder menu, or right-click on the folder in the Folder List and select Remove from the context menu.  Note that the folder is only removed from the Folder List in Recorded TV Manager, neither the folder nor any of its contents are physically removed.

Important: If you remove a folder which is referenced in any AutoCopy rules, those rules will no longer work correctly.  Use the AutoCopy Rules Editor to Modify or Remove the affected AutoCopy rules.

Diagnosing Folder Problems

Folder does not appear in the Browse for Folder dialog

If a folder does not appear in Network (or My Network Places) in the Browse For Folder dialog, it is not properly shared.  See Folder Sharing.

Not AvailableNot Available

If a folder in the Folder List is "Not Available" and the machine on which it resides is not turned off, asleep or otherwise disconnected from the network, then it may not be properly shared.  See Folder Sharing for more information.

In addition, "Not Available" can also be caused by interference from a Firewall.  See Setting Firewall Exceptions.

Folder Sharing

Folders which are to be added to the Folder List must be Shared, with Full access rights granted to the user account which the Console and AutoCopy service are logged in under.  Even folders on the local machine where the Console is installed (Host) must be shared before they can be added to the Folder List.  The easiest way to do this is to share the folders with Full Access for Everyone.

Sharing Recorded TV folders on Vista:

  1. Using Windows Explorer, right-click the folder you want to share and select Properties.
  2. Select the Sharing tab.
  3. If the folder is not already shared, click Share to start sharing.
  4. In the Chose people to share with dialog, from the drop-down menu select Everyone (All users in this list).
  5. Click Add and then set the Permission level to Co-owner.
  6. Click Share and then click Continue in UAC and then click Done.
  7. Click Advanced Sharing... and in UAC click Continue.
  8. Make sure Share this folder is checked.
  9. Click Permissions.
  10. Select Allow Full Control for Everyone.
  11. Click Apply.
  12. Click OK.
  13. Click OK.
  14. Click Close.

After setting the sharing options, it may be necessary to restart the computer before they will take effect.
