Important:
This software requires Windows 7 with Media Center.
This software expects Window Media Center has already been set up with, at minimum, Express Setup.
This software should be installed under a user account with Administrative privilege.
For use with Recorded TV Manager Add-in for Windows Home Server, the host machine must have the Home Server Connector software installed.
For non-English Windows Home Server installations, see important information here.
November 4, 2010 - *NEW* Add-on app for this software - xmlMetaData Search
1. Download and Install MetaDataServiceSetup.msi
Important: Do not start the service or run the Check MetaData program until the following additional installation steps are completed.
2. Run the MetaData Config program
Important: This step is required and MUST be done first.
Start >> All Programs >> Recorded TV Manager >> Config MetaData
Important: Do not run the Check MetaData program at this time.
PATH
The defaultPATH is the path on the local machine where the MetaData files will be saved. See Locating the MetaData XML files.
The PATH is the path to the Recorded TV Manager data files, specifically the Folder List file, folders.xml.
On Windows Home Server networks, the PATH will point to the Software share on the Home Server. Otherwise, the PATH will be set to the defaultPATH on the local machine.
Windows Home Server
This section only applies when the host machine is on a Windows Home Server network with the Recorded TV Manager Add-in installed. For all other cases, ignore this and don't change the name.
Some language versions of Windows Home Server localize the name of the Software share on the Server. See Localizing the Software Share Name.
MetaData
The MetaData Path is the full path to the MetaData XML files.
The MetaData Share is the share name for the MetaData files.
See here for more information about the Config MetaData program.
Click OK to finish configuration.
Control Panel >> Network and Internet >> Network and Sharing Center
Select Change Advanced Sharing Settings from the left panel and set the options as follows:
Important: Click Save Changes to apply these settings.
The MetaData folder is located at the defaultPATH. Use Windows Explorer to navigate to the MetaData folder.
If the ProgramData folder is not visible, see Locating the MetaData XML files.
Right-click the MetaData folder and select Properties. Then select the Sharing tab. Note that the Network Path should match the MetaData Share in the Config program.
Click Share..., then locate "Everyone" in the list and then Add it.
Set the Permission Level for Everyone to Read/Write and then click the Share button.
5. Set Folder Sharing Properties for the Recorded TV Folder
Navigate to the Recorded TV folder using Windows Explorer.
Right-click Public Recorded TV (in the left pane) and select Properties. Then select the Sharing tab and click Advanced Sharing...
Check the box Share this Folder and do not change the default share name, Recorded TV.
Click Permissions and then allow Full Control for Everyone.
Click Apply, then OK, then OK again to save the changes.
6. (Optional) Expand the Folder List
The Folder List is the list of folders that the MetaData service will monitor for recorded TV files. The PATH variable points to the location of the Folder List.
Note: This section does not apply to Windows Home Server networks which have Recorded TV Manager Add-in installed. In that case, the folder list is defined from the Recorded TV Manager tab on the Home Server Console.
The first time the MetaData service runs it will construct a default Folder List consisting of the Public Recorded TV folder on the local machine and any other folders which are included in the Media Center Watched Folders list. To edit the Watched Folder List in Media Center, use Tasks >> Settings >> Media Libraries >> Recorded TV. Note that sub-directories of Watched Folders are not included.
To change the default Folder List after it has been created by the MetaData Service:
1. Stop the MetaData Service using Control Panel >> ... >> Services.
2. Delete the current Default Folder List (Folders.xml) which is located in the PATH\Data directory.
3. Edit the Watched Folder list in Media Center.
4. Edit the Folder List (if necessary).
5. Restart the MetaData Service.
7. Set the MetaData Service Log On Account and Password
Important: To access network shares it is necessary to first configure the Log On account for the MetaData Service. The Log On account is the user account that the service will run under, which must have administrative privilege, and it must have a password. Do not Start the service until the Log On account is configured.
Control Panel >> System and Security >> Administrative Tools >> Services
Scroll down and select the MetaData Service.
From the Action menu, select Properties and then select the Log On tab.
Click Browse... to open the Select User dialog.
Enter the User name in the textbox, as in "user2" above, and then click OK. The user account must have Administrative privilege and it must be password protected. It is recommended that this be the same user account that the software was installed under.
The account name will be prefixed with a dot-backslash (.\) which is required system notation. Note that although the Password fields are filled in, these are NOT the correct passwords. Enter and confirm the password for the account, and then click Apply.
The Public Recorded TV Folder in the Media Center Watched Folders list is not in UNC format and the MetaData Service requires only UNC formatted folder references.
Start the MetaData Service to create the default Folder List.
Control Panel >> System and Security >> Administrative Tools >> Services
Scroll down and select the MetaData Service. Click Start.
After the MetaData Service starts, the default Folder List will have been defined.
Stop the MetaData Service.
Navigate and open the "Data" folder in the location pointed to by the PATH variable. Right-click the file Folders.xml and select Open With... Select Notepad or another text editor to open the file for editing.
Edit the highlighted fields to match the Network Share name as configured in #5 above.
Close and SAVE the modified Folders.xml file. Note that since the Data folder is within the special folder ProgramData, it may be necessary to save the modified copy as a different name (folders1.xml) first. Delete the original file and then rename the modified file to Folders.xml. This is a security requirement imposed by Windows.
Start the MetaData Service.
You can also re-boot the computer to start the MetaData Service automatically. The MetaData Service will start automatically whenever the computer is re-started.
9. Verify the MetaData Service is Running
To verify the MetaData service has started and is functioning, use the Windows Event Viewer.
Control Panel >> System and Security >> View event logs
Following the Start event are additional events:
Software Share Name - On Windows Home System networks, this should be the localized name of the Software Share. This is not relevant to non-WHS systems. See the Release Notes for more information.
PATH - The PATH is the location of the default Folder List (Folders.xml). Note that for Home Server Networks with the Recorded TV Manager Add-in, this location is on the Home Server.
defaultPATH - This is the location on the local machine where the MetaData files will be stored.
"Watching <folder>" - There will be one event for each folder in the default Folder List. Note that the first time the service starts, it will create all new MetaData xml files at the location defaultPATH. If there are a large number of recorded TV files in multiple folders, it may take some time (4-5 minutes) for all of these events to appear and for all the MetaData XML files to be created.
