Why I don't plan to build a version of Recorded TV Manager Add-in for WHS 2011

Well, it's basically an economic decision. Please see my explanation here...

It is my intention to continue to support Recorded TV Manager, and I am working on some updates for release this summer.

There is, available now, a viable upgrade path for WHS V1 Add-in users (and anyone else recording a lot of TV). Recorded TV Manager Console provides all the same functionality as the WHS V1 Add-in except it doesn't require a Windows Home Server.

Search Recorded TV MetaData

The MetaData Service maintains a database of xml files which contain the metadata for all recorded TV files on the network (dvr-ms and wtv). This FREE utility program (xmlMetaDataSearch.exe) provides a search interface to that xml database.

Using Stitch on NFL Sunday Night

This past Sunday, CBS had a double-header game so it was likely that the CBS primetime lineup would start late. I have CSI: Miami on series record, and manually added the local news following CSI and also the show after that. Good thing because CSI didn't start until almost 11pm.

With Stitch, I can play them as a unit, starting with the 10pm recording. Fast-forward the 10pm recording to the start of CSI and then let it play through all 3 recordings automatically. When CSI ends (almost 20 minutes into the third recording) I can delete them all at the same time.

Automatic TV playlist generator and player.

This Media Center add-in searches all the folders and subfolders in the Media Center Watched Folder List for consecutive recordings on the same channel.

Consecutive recordings are recordings on the same channel where the end time of one is less than a 10 second difference from the start time of the next recording. There can be any number of consecutive recordings in a group.

Each group is a playlist which can then be played and deleted as a group.

This is a minor maintenance update to fix a specific issue with Extenders.

Multiple Marathon sessions running on the same machine at the same time do not work properly. Multiple sessions includes the host and one or more extenders attached to the same host. The problem is fixed in this update.

Windows 7 Sample Media WTV file causes problems.

The sample media WTV file which is shipped with Windows 7 contains different metadata encoding than WTV files which are produced by Media Center. If this file is placed in a folder in the Recorded TV Manager Folder List, it causes problems including not seeing any of the other files in the folder.

In some circumstances, certain individual recordings fail to appear in Recorded TV Manager.

This is an indexing error in the code which interfaces with WTV files. This is already fixed and will apply in all future releases of the affected software. In the interim, there is an easy to apply workaround.

On systems running Windows 7 (RC1 or later), Recorded TV Manager Console now provides FULL WTV file support. There is no difference between DVR-MS files and WTV files in Recorded TV Manager Console running in Windows 7.

The Windows Home Server Add-in has been updated to Version 3.7.6. This update adds support for WTV files and includes improved error handling and greater stability. Also released is Beta 3 of the Recorded TV Manager Media Center Add-in which also adds support for WTV files and other minor improvements.

This is a minor update which fixes some issues related to WTV files. If upgrading from build 4.2.1 you MUST uninstall from the Control Panel first and then install. Data files will be retained, but you may need to reconfigure AutoMove.
